The First Clothing

What was the purpose of Adam and Eve making clothing to wear after they ate of the forbidden fruit? (Genesis 3:7) Some say it was to cover their naked bodies (private parts). But I believe that Genesis 3:8 & 11 gives us the real reason. Because of their sin (disobedience), they were full of guilt, shame and fear. The clothing they made was an attempt to ‘Hide from God.’

The clothing (covering) Adam and Eve made was fully inadequate to cover or cleanse them from the evil they had done (sin). For Scripture says, without a blood sacrifice there is no forgiveness or covering for sin (Hebrews 9:22). To better cover their sin, God sacrificed an animal to make clothing of animal skin (Genesis 3:21). But the word for clothing used in Scripture shows the animal skin as incomplete or not good enough. The blood sacrifice in the Garden of Eden was only a temporary covering for the sin (rebellion) of Adam and Eve. That sacrifice was a picture of what was to come. It was a type of Christ, and (I believe) probably a lamb.

Just like Adam and Eve, everyone of us have sinned, rebelled, and disobeyed God (Romans 3:23). No matter how much clothing we wear or what sacrifices we make, nothing we do or wear can hide our evil deeds from God. We needed a better sacrifice to cleanse us from our sin.

So God in love for His creation (mankind) did a greater thing. God came to earth as a man. (John chapter 1) When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.’ (John 1:29) Yes, Jesus came to earth to become the Perfect Sacrifice for our sin (Romans 5:9). Jesus became the Lamb of God, to not just cover our sins, but to wash them away. (I John 2:2)

God in His love and wisdom has made a way to cleanse you and me of all of our sin. He only asks for each of us to trust in Him and turn from our evil deeds. If you feel that guilt and shame for the things you have done, put your trust in Jesus Christ (and His sacrifice). Trust in Him, and God will make a place for you in Heaven. That is called being Born Again. (John 3:3)
